VFW Department of Michigan is encouraging VFW Posts and members to support the completion of construction of the Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial in Royal Oak, MI. While the Department has made some contribution to this project in the past, this would be the first organized effort for the Department to participate as a supporter of this long over due project to honor Michigan’s World War II veterans.
The goal of the project is to provide permanent memorial that will provide a year-round multipurpose destination telling Michigan's unique story. Also, the memorial will be a resource for educational programs, events, veteran outreach and resources in keeping with our mission.
To Donate: Posts can mail a donation check directly to VFW Department of Michigan earmarked for "World War II Memorial.” These funds will be collected and delivered to the Memorial Committee at a time selected by the State Commander. Donations sent to department can be addressed to 924 N Washington Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.
OR donations can be sent directly to the the memorial and mailed to Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial PO Box 237 Royal Oak, MI 48068. Proof of your direct donation must be submitted to Department for All State Program record keeping.

The Ionia County Courthouse in Michigan is home to the battle flag of the 21st Infantry Regiment from the Civil War, made up of volunteer forces from 18 counties in Michigan.
This silk flag was hand-embroidered and gifted by the "ladies of Ionia." It played a crucial role in the Union's victory during Sherman's march through Kentucky, Georgia, and North Carolina. The flag's return to its originators on July 4th, 1865, was a momentous occasion for the regiment, which suffered heavy casualties during the war. Since then, the flag has been on display at the Ionia courthouse for over 160 years, bearing witness to the past.
However, the flag now requires restoration and conservation to ensure that it continues to be a symbol of history for future generations in Ionia County. We are seeking a coalition of individuals who share a deep appreciation of history to contribute towards our fundraising goal of $50,000. This will enable us to restore and preserve this unique battle flag and place it in a state-of-the-art display case to protect it from further damage, saving it from being tucked away in a closet at the Michigan History Museum in Lansing.

Upcoming Event: On January 26, 2024, the VFW Posts will host the 21st Infantry Gala, where guests can have dinner, learn about Michigan’s Civil War history and participate in a silent auction as a fundraiser. The event will also feature Vietnam veteran and Medal of Honor Recipient Sammy L. Davis as the keynote speaker.

The Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial is a new national monument to be built at the National Mall in Washington D.C. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on July 14, 2022, with the goal of project completion and dedication in 2025.
National Desert Storm and Desert Shield War Memorial Act - Authorizes the National Desert Storm Memorial Association to establish a commemorative work on federal land in the District of Columbia to commemorate and honor those who, as members of the Armed Forces, served on active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm or Operation Desert Shield.

VFW Department of Hawaii has been active in their community following the devastating Maui wildfire in August. VFW National is collecting disaster relief donations to support Departments and Posts in disaster areas who are helping their communities recover.
